Pecan Cooking Contest has a Few Spots Left

"I’ve had a good response,” said pecan cooking contest coordinator Meleah Evers Friday. Although the official deadline for submitting recipes had arrived, she thought she would still have room for a few entries if people go online to register today.

The annual pecan cooking contest will be held at Vineland Station on Saturday, Nov. 4, as part of the N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival.

Prize ribbons will be awarded to three winners in each category, with a $150 cash award to one overall grand prize adult winner.

Recipes can be submitted online at www.ncpecanfestival.com, or they can be sent to the Pecan Festival offices. Recipes submitted on paper need to be printed on an 8-1/2 x 11 inch sheet. In the upper right corner, the entrant must include name, address, telephone number, and category entered. Youth division contestants need to include age and school attending.

Each cook may submit only one entry per category and each entry must contain at least one cup of pecans. Each entry must be prepared by the contestant entering it.

Adults (ages 16 and older) may enter one recipe in each category: appetizer, main dish, side dish or salads, and desserts.

Contestants between the ages of 10 and 15 may enter one recipe in the dessert category only. All entries must be prepared by the contestant.

Contestants will prepare and deliver entries for each category entered to Vineland Station Depot, 701 South Madison Street, Whiteville, on the day of the festival. Doors will open at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, and will be locked at 9:30 a.m. No entries will be accepted after 9:30 a.m.

Neither refrigeration facilities nor ovens for heating will not be available. Competitors are allowed, however, to build hot or cold packs into their display to preserve their desired food temperature. Any type of container may be used. Contestants will have a 2x2 foot space to display and decorate each entry.
