It’s time to search the family cookbook for favorite pecan recipes – or create a new favorite – and enter the annual pecan cooking contest, which will be held at Vineland Station on Saturday, Nov. 4, as part of the N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival.

The popular contest is open to youth (ages 10-15) and adults of North Carolina. This year’s contest is directly sponsored by Columbus Regional Healthcare System.

Prize ribbons will be awarded to three winners in each category, with a $150 cash award to one overall grand prize adult winner.

Recipes can be submittedonline at www.ncpecanfestival.com, or they can be sent to the Pecan Festival offices. Recipes submitted on paper need to be printed on an 8-1/2 x 11 inch sheet. In the upper right corner, the entrant must include name, address, telephone number, and category entered. Youth division contestants need to include age and school attending. Paper entries can be mailed to NC Pecan Harvest Festival Cooking Contest, PO Box 1321, Whiteville, N.C. 28472.

Entry deadline is Friday, October 27, 2017.

Each cook may submit only one entry per category, and each entry must contain at least one cup of pecans. Each entry must be prepared by the contestant entering it.

Adults (ages 16 and older) may enter one recipe in each category: appetizer, main dish, side dish or salads, and desserts.

Contestants between the ages of 10 and 15 may enter one recipe in the dessert category only.

Contestants will deliver entries to Vineland Station Depot, 701 South Madison Street, Whiteville, NC. Doors will open at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, and will be locked at 9:30 a.m. No entries will be accepted after 9:30 a.m.

No parent or other adult will be allowed to assist youth competitors in the set-up area.

Neither refrigeration facilities nor ovens for heating will not be available. Competitors are allowed, however, to build hot or cold packs into their display to preserve their desired food temperature. Any type of container may be used. Contestants will have a 2x2 foot space to display and decorate each entry.

Prospective competitors with questions may call 641-3996 and ask for Meleah Evers, contest coordinator.

Recipes do not have to be original and will become the property of the N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival and the Pecan Growers Association.

Judging will begin at 10 a.m. Contestants and the public will not be allowed to enter the display area during the judging. The public is invited to view the entries between 1-2 p.m.

Winners will be announced and awarded their prize money at approximately 2 pm at the main stage.

Entries will be judged on: Flavor 40 percent, appearance 20 percent, creative use of pecans 20 percent, texture 10 percent and ease of recipe 10 percent. Ribbons will be awarded to the first three places in each category. A Grand Prize Overall will be awarded in the adult category and will receive a $150 cash prize. Additional ribbon awards will also be given for Best Presentation and Most Creative Use of Pecans.
