Pecan run 2017 imageThe first event of the N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival will take place a week before the crowds descend on downtown Whiteville, as runners and walkers complete the annual 5K sponsored by Body Shapers Gym and Fitness on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Participants may fill out a registration form at the gym or online at www.ncpecanfestival.com for $15.

Same-day registration for $20 will be available from 7 a.m., with the run/walk beginning at 8 a.m. Proceeds benefit Families First Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Shelter and Services. Participants under age 18 must have a parent sign the registration form with them.

"We hope people will register ahead of time so there’s less to do that day,” said gym owner Jeff Faulk.

Originally, the run/walk was held on the day of the downtown festival, but as the number of vendors and car show participants has multiplied, the Pecan Run moved to the weekend before, for the sake of safety.

"We’ve had about 100 runners every year we’ve been involved,” said Faulk. "When I say ‘runners,’ I mean about 20 of them run and the rest walk or do both.”

The flat route will go uptown and back, beginning and ending in the 600 block of South Madison Street, where Body Shapers and the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism are both located.

In some past years, said Faulk, a t-shirt was included with registration, but "this year we decided not to get t-shirts so that more money could go to Families First. It’s a good cause.” Besides, many participants were opting not to take their shirts.

There will be awards to the fastest male and female runners.

For directions or other information, people may call Body Shapers at 642-4607.
