An annual tradition at each N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival is the presentation of the Pecan Belles, who welcome visitors to locations on the home tour and represent Whiteville’s longstanding pecan-growing tradition.

The following six girls are Pecan Belles for 2017: Whitley Dockery, daughter of Dalton and Sheil a Dockery; Melena Hester, daughter of Donald and Jennifer Hester; Emma Hooks, daughter of Buddy and Susan Hooks; Isabella Hopkins, daughter of Geoff and Nicole Hopkins; Zy-Kia Pierce, daughter of LaShonda Pierce; and Grace Ann Wooten, daughter of George and Stephanie Wooten.

The six Belles were chosen from a fi eld of 18 applicants, all of them eighth graders at Central Middle School. Eighth-grade girls from Columbus Christian Academy and Columbus Charter School are also welcome to take part, but this year all applicants were from the city system.

Six cadets from Camden Military Institute traditionally escort the Belles to the festival queen’s luncheon every year, after which the young people go out in pairs to welcome visitors at each stop on the elegant homes tour. The Belles and cadets will also be featured in the festival parade on Saturday morning.
