Contest Cancelled for this Year
The Pecan Harvest Festival Cooking Contest is open to youth (8-17 Years of Age) of North Carolina and is limited to the first 150 entries.
Recipes can be submitted online (CLICK HERE) or they can be sent to the Pecan Festival offices. If you submit on paper they need to be typed or printed on an 8-1/2 x 11 inch sheet of paper. In the upper right corner, include name, address, telephone number, school attending and youth category (8-12 Years of Age or 13-17 Years of Age) entered.
Recipes must be submitted by Friday, October 25, 2019. If you are submitting your recipe on paper you can deliver it to Meleah Evers (NC Cooperative Extension, 45 Government Complex Road, Whiteville, NC) or Jamesie Gentry (Whiteville City Schools Board of Education, 107 West Walter Street, Whiteville, NC); or, you can mail it NC Pecan Harvest Festival Cooking Contest, PO Box 1321, Whiteville, NC 28472. One recipe per contestant can be submitted and each entry must contain at least one cup of pecans. Entries must be prepared by the contestant.
Categories: Entries will be divided into two categories (8-12 Years of Age and 13-17 Years of Age). The entering recipe can be an appetizer, main dish, side/salads, or dessert. Again, each recipe must contain at least one cup of pecans and must be prepared by the contestant. Only the contestant will be allowed to set up the item in the display area. No parent or other adult will be allowed to assist the youth..
Contestants will prepare and deliver entries to the Columbus County Arts Council, 822 South Madison Street, Whiteville, NC. The doors will open at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2019, and will be locked at 9:30 a.m. No entries accepted after 9:30 a.m.
Refrigeration facilities and ovens for heating will not be available. Any type of container may be used. Contestants will have a 2 x 2 foot space to display and decorate each entry.
Recipes do not have to be original and will become the property of the N.C. Pecan Harvest Festival and the Pecan Growers Association.
Judging will begin at 10:00 a.m. Contestants or the public will not be allowed to view the judging. The public is invited to view the entries between 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m.
Winners will be awarded their prize money at approximately 1:00 p.m. Winners will be announced at the main stage at approximately 2:00 p.m.
Entries will be judged on: Flavor 40 percent, appearance 20 percent, creative use of pecans 20 percent, texture 10 percent and ease of recipe 10 percent. Ribbons and cash prizes will be awarded to the first three places in each of the two age-group categories (First: $20; Second: $15; Third: $10). A "Grand Prize Overall Winner" will be awarded and will receive a $50 cash prize. Additional ribbon awards will also be given for "Best Presentation" and "Most Creative Use of Pecans".
